Planning & Installing Your Green

The process of installing a putting green involves a carefully planned series of steps.  The skills that are required to install a green increase in difficulty as the size of the putting green increases.

Smaller  putting green that are under 500 square feet require less precision in preparation and turf installation. Larger greens require more planning and precision, and can likely be too much of a headache for the average consumer.

We strongly recommend that you consider having putting greens over 500 square feet installed by a Trusted service Inc certified installer. If you decide to self install, we have included the essential steps that you will need to take to install a basic putting green.

  • Planning a Putting green is the first and most crucial step of the process. See planning for details.
  • Design and layout is necessary to ensure proper placement before the work begins.
  • Clear the area of vegetation and other debris when preparing the area for your putting green.
  • Install a ground stabilization tarp to insure a solid, long lasting foundation.
  • Setting the cup sleeves is the first step in installing the base.
  • The most labor intensive step in the installation process is the aggregate or concrete base installation. This involves a series of steps to work and re-work the base until perfection is attained.
  • Next is the placement of the turf. This step most likely will also involve seaming of two or more sections.
  • Cutting, trimming and permanent setting of the cups will require a delicate touch and care.
  • The next step is trimming and shaping the outer edges of the putting green. Also, at this stage a fringe can be installed if desired.
  • The last step in the basic process, if applicable, is the application of fill material, or top dressing.

As you can see there are a number of steps involved in even a basic green installation. A putting green of 500 square feet or less can typically be installed by two adults in a 1.5 to 2.5 day time frame.
